“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Have you ever been to the doctor because you are hurting? And what happened? Did you come away with medication for pain, but no insight into why you are hurting or where the pain came from? Chances are good you did. I have no ax to grind with doctors…okay, maybe with one or two… one can’t be a nurse for twenty-five years and not have that happen. I have no problem with pain medications as needed. The point I wish to make here is that pain is not a disease, it is a symptom. You hurt because a part of you is injured or under attack by disease. Pain is the signal that something is wrong.
Stay with me now. Evil or, if you prefer, sinful acts are like pain…they are a symptom of some deeper problem. Evil actions are not the disease, it goes deeper than that. The disease is a spiritual disconnect from the Creator. God’s design for every person is “Yes” and blessing. When anything but, “Yes” and blessing occurs in our lives it is for one of two reasons. There is either a lesson to be learned in order for us to properly handle a coming blessing or we are disconnected from the Divine design.
Disconnect from God is a choice people make in their heart and mind. It has always has been so and always will be. This disconnect stems from a heart lusting to “be as gods,” a spiritual, self-determination in favor of the self. Left to one’s own devices and spiritual leadership…well, we have a long history the world over of how that works out.
Our ability to choose our course through life is a by-product of the Creator’s desire to have a love relationship with us. True love is the choice of free will. If we are to be free to love, we must be equally free to reject love. God does not force love on us. Even when we enter into a relationship with God, we are not forced to love…not God, not ourself, not our neighbor. Love is not only a choice, but it is also a continual choice.
The One who made us will judge us. Love is the measuring stick to be used in that process. Those who spend a life connected to the Divine know heaven. They are tasting it now and it will eventually flow over, through, and around them on every side.
Those who choose to go their own way separated from Divine fellowship will carry that choice to judgment and all that follows. They will be given what they have chosen all their life…disconnect and separation from God. Separation from God, groping blindly for the source of life…that is hell. Jesus likened hell to outer darkness and so it is. God sends no one to hell, they choose it.
The things we think and the things we say are reflections of what our heart is like. We are not without a remedy. Those same things, what we think and what we say, profoundly influence the condition of the heart. Changing your thinking and changing your speech can and do change the heart.
Pain medications dull the senses and relieve the pain for a time. Some people use churches, denominations and religious formulas like they do pain medication, to dull the spiritual senses and relieve their pain for a season. This is not God’s plan. God’s plan is a relationship between creature and Creator based on love. Unless and until you have that, all the rest is of no value.
